How to Become a UK Orthodontist: Qualifications and Requirements

When aspiring to become an orthodontist in the United Kingdom, it is essential to have a degree in dental surgery (BDS or BChD). After obtaining the BDS degree, applicants must have at least 24 months of experience before they can apply for specialized training. Additionally, applicants must have completed their basic dental training and received their artist number, which will enable them to work in the NHS in the UK. In order to specialize in orthodontics, applicants must first qualify as a dentist and then pursue a three-year full-time postgraduate course. Although only 3% of UK dentists are qualified as specialist orthodontists, any dentist can dedicate themselves to dentistry without having to start a DCT career, as long as they can demonstrate equivalent competencies. To become an orthodontist, one must first be a qualified dentist and then pursue a postgraduate course in orthodontics to specialize in this field.
