Becoming an Orthodontist in the UK: A Comprehensive Guide

Are you interested in becoming an orthodontist in the United Kingdom? If so, you're in luck! Orthodontic training in the UK is a comprehensive three-year program that will equip you with the skills and knowledge to become a specialist in this field. After completing the program, you can continue your training for two more years to reach the consultant level. The journey to becoming an orthodontist starts with good A-level grades, usually ABB, to secure a place at a university to study dentistry. It typically takes five years to earn a Bachelor's degree in Dental Surgery (BDS).

After graduating, you'll need to gain experience in all fields of dentistry before applying for a place in an orthodontic training program. This training requires another three years of study and consists of both academic and practical components. Upon successful completion of the orthodontic membership exam (M, Orth), you will become a specialist orthodontist. The course has been established for more than 40 years and is one of the oldest clinical training programs in the UK.

It will provide you with the necessary skills to perform as a competent orthodontic specialist, with a focus on clinical, theoretical and research areas needed for providing appropriate patient care. All students are encouraged to take up orthodontic membership.
